For most educators, there is only one choice of certificate area, based on the subject and grade level of your teaching assignment. Find the complete list of certificate areas at www.boardcertifiedteachers.org.
Elementary teachers do have a choice of two certificate areas: Generalist or Literacy: Reading-Language Arts. Generalist components address reading-language arts, math, and science.
The Career and Technical Education certificate is designed for business, family and consumer science, computer science, agriculture, and areas often taught at career and technical centers.
National Board Certification: Foundations I is appropriate for those who want to elevate their professional practice, those who are considering National Board Certification, and those who have decided to begin the National Board Certification process. While eligibility for NBC begins after three years of experience, teachers with as little as one year of experience benefit from this session.
Print out and bring the National Board Five Core Propositions with you (www.nbpts.org/five-core-propositions) as well as the National Board standards for your certificate area (boardcertifiedteachers.org/certificate-areas). Past participants recommend single-sided pages, since participants write copiously on the pages.
All National Board candidates who plan to attend MNEA’s Jumpstart to National Board Certification July 19-21 must attend Foundations I. Foundations I attendees do not have to attend Jumpstart to NBC.
