Returning to school amid COVID-19: Action plans for Missouri school districts

Typically, back-to-school is a time filled with excitement and anticipation for teachers, administrators, students and parents. This year, Missouri school districts are busy making plans for what instruction will look like in fall 2020. When school buildings and campuses reopen, students’ and educators’ health and safety must be a top priority.

As you consider your school district's plans for reopening, be sure to review the Missouri NEA Standards for Safe Students.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has released reopening guidance for the 2020-2021 school year. The guidelines remove attendance from the 2020-2021 MSIP Annual Performance report and describes methods to make payments to school districts for onsite, virtual and blended instruction models. Attendance will be monitored locally and reported to DESE annually; however, it will not be used for district or school accountability in 2020-2021. DESE encourages schools to suspend attendance incentives to discourage parents from sending children to school if they feel ill.

What’s the plan for your school district? Take a look at the list below. Don’t see your school district on the list? Check back often. We will be adding new plans as they are released.

Want to submit your school district’s plan for the list? Please send it to coronavirus@mnea.org.

Share your story

Even though we are not at school supporting Missouri students, members continue to help every day during this crisis. MNEA wants to share your stories as we struggle through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are hearing about members who are continuing to care for their students by

  • volunteering at school district Grab & Go meal distribution centers and food drives
  • providing child care for essential medical staff
  • shopping for the elderly so they don’t have to leave the safety of their homes

Your stories help show that educators don’t stop caring. Please send your stories with pictures to MNEA at coronavirus@mnea.org, so we can share them. You can post to social media, making sure you tag @MissouriNEA and use the hashtags  #MNEAheroes and  #MNEAprotects.
