Associated Press Story - Decision may threaten Mo. school workers' benefits

Missouri Office of Administration

Public School Retirement System

Senator McCaskill's office forwarded a copy of the letter the Missouri congressional delegation received from the IRS and Social Security Admininstration (attached) which maintains their position that some school district employees need to contribute to Social Security. However, the letter does acknowledge a need to extend the timeline past July 1, 2009 to determine who might be impacted as well as answering several other questions posed in the December 17th letter written by our congressional delegation (already on our website). In the January 6 IRS/SS response, the IRS/SS implies they hope to have answers prior to July 1, 2010. In addition, the letter restates that a special evaluation team has 60 days to recommend other solutions and report to the congressional delegation. Missouri NEA is monitoring the work of this evaluation team.

Overall, this is a small but significant victory. Extending the timeline beyond July 1, 2009 was Missouri NEA's primary short-term goal.. Our work with the Missouri congressional delegation and other state stateholders is paying off. A special thank you to our US Senators and Congressmen for succeeding at securing an extension of the timeline. A special thanks to Senator McCaskill and her staff liason, Melissa Garza, for keeping Missouri NEA very well informed.

What Next? Missouri NEA will focus on the work of the evaluation team (IRS, SS, PSRS) prior to finalizing our battery of long term solutions. It is important to remember that until we know exactly who will be impacted - we cannot design effective long-term solutions.
