Uproar over PSRS executive salary figures
The Kansas City Star article, "Apple
for the teacher, but luxury for the execs," detailed
the salaries of the executive staff employed by the Public
School Retirement System. The public including teachers, retired
education personnel, and education support professionals have
been in an uproar over the inflated compensation figures ever
since the article was published Oct. 19, 2008. Missouri NEA
is watching the situation closely. Below you will find Missouri
NEA's response to the article, PSRS Board Chair Tina Zubeck's
response and the response from PSRS/PEERS.
Missouri NEA's Response:
It goes without saying that Missouri NEA believes
that it is vital that MNEA members have a secure retirement
system. MNEA does not support the squandering of our members'
pensions on expensive perks and continue to follow up in investigating
the facts so that we can fully understand the situation.
Currently no MNEA members serve on the PSRS Board. Obviously,
we need to make sure that we elect "watchdogs" to
the board—members who will ask the tough questions and
challenge any inappropriate use of our funds.
We will continue to keep you posted.
