TRAINING SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

THURSDAY FULL-DAY TRAINING SESSIONS
Growing Your Local

This session will focus on developing a year round membership campaign with emphasis on the impact of “power in numbers” on salaries, benefits, working conditions and issue organizing. Organizing for Power will be the model utilized in this training.

In addition to the pre-conference seminar, participants will be able to choose to attend one of the breakout sessions Thursday afternoon.

Leading Your Local

Whether you are a new local president or have been local president for many years, this workshop is a must for you. Local presidents, vice presidents and presidents-elect will get an overview of Missouri NEA programs, tools to assist in doing an effective job, and the opportunity to find answers to questions. Participants will be provided a significant advantage over local leaders who do not attend this session.

Do you wonder what the job of local president is all about? Are you puzzled about where to start? Do you need the assistance of experienced leaders? Then this is the workshop for you.

Emerging Leaders

In this session, participants will be exposed to the structure and programs of NEA, MNEA and local affiliates. This training will address the structures and functioning of representative assemblies, parliamentary procedure, using your communication skills, the ins and outs of membership recruitment and becoming an effective leader. The culmination of the program is the graduation ceremony, complete with the presentation of a “diploma,” at the closing general session of the conference.

In addition to the pre-conference seminar, participants will be able to choose to attend one of the breakout sessions Thursday afternoon.

Higher Education Issues This year’s Summer Academy features MNEA’s first ever pre-conference track dedicated to the needs and interests of our members in Higher Education. Higher Education issues and the ins and outs of Association work in a Higher Education setting will be highlighted. Specialists from NEA’s Higher Education Department will offer training and help facilitate the discussion.
Women’s Leadership Conference This year Women’s Leadership Conference is being offered concurrently with the Summer Academy pre-conferences. The training will be offered to 14 individuals recognized as potential local leaders. Personal Assessment Leadership Skills (PALS) for members in the early stages of Association participation is the focus of the training. It is designed to explore and practice basic leadership skills. Participants will focus on PALS from July 22 – 24 and then interact with regular Summer Academy participants thru the closing session midday Friday, July 25.
