Lewis and Clark ‘Coins for the Corps’
project
invites student participation
The
Jefferson City Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Task Force is
sponsoring a statewide funding initiative for a bronze heroic-size
monument honoring the Corps of Discovery Expedition. The monument
will be placed adjacent to the Jefferson Landing State Historic
Site within the Capitol Complex in Jefferson City. The figures
will be those of Captains Lewis and Clark; George Drouillard,
Shawnee/French interpreter; York, servant to Clark; and Seaman,
the expedition’s dog. The dedication will be in September
2006.
“Coins for the Corps” is the student statewide
portion of this project. The Task Force invites all schools
to participate in this endeavor. After numerous requests from
teachers, the Task Force decided to continue the fundraising
project for the 2005–2006 school year. Details for various
fundraising suggestions can be found on the Task Force Web
site, www.jeffcitymo.org/lc.
Following the students’ fundraising efforts, teachers
are asked to complete a certificate of participation that
will be placed in the City of Jefferson Task Force Archives.
All projects and donations must be completed by May
1, 2006. Participating schools will also get an opportunity
to be represented by a student from their school in the Lewis
and Clark “Coins for the Corps” Art Exhibit planned
for September 2006 in Jefferson City. For any specific questions
contact Janet Maurer at jmmaurer@socket.net.
