Columbia, MO – In a March 11 election, a majority (94%) of the parent educators in the Parents as Teachers program at the Columbia Public Schools voted to authorize the Columbia Missouri National Education Association to represent them for the purpose of collective bargaining.

“We are excited to be following in the CPS teachers’ footsteps by electing CMNEA as our exclusive collective bargaining representative,” says said Parent Educator Kristine Albright Smith. “We look forward to working with both CMNEA and the district to continue to provide the best PAT program in the state for our CPS families with young children.”

Teachers, counselors and librarians in the district have been represented by CMNEA for three years. CMNEA is currently bargaining with the district to renew its current agreement.

"We are thrilled to welcome the parent educators to our association,” says CMNEA President Susan McClintic. “As an elementary teacher, I understand how important the Parents as Teachers program is to my future students. Parent educators do an important job under challenging conditions, and we look forward to helping them make the program even better."

The Columbia Missouri National Education Association represents educators in the Columbia Public Schools. It is the local affiliate of the 35,000-member MNEA, which represents teachers, education support professionals, college faculty, retired teachers and students studying to be teachers in school districts and on college campuses throughout the state. Missouri NEA is an affiliate of the 3 million-member NEA.
